On May 27, at the Komitas Chamber Music Hall, the “Tagharan” Ensemble of Ancient Music presented the unique recital concert “De España Vengo»” / “I Come from Spain” by soprano and International Competition Laureate Gayane Ghambaryan.

During the evening, excerpts from Spanish zarzuelas were also performed. The arrangements and orchestrations were created by the ensemble’s Artistic Director and Conductor, Honored Cultural Worker of the Republic of Armenia Sedrak Yerkanyan. Gayane Ghambaryan’s collaboration with the ensemble began in 2018, and since 2020 she has been a soloist of “Tagharan.”

Last September, Ghambaryan had already performed the concert program “I Come from Spain” before another full house. The program was received with such enthusiasm that it had to be repeated. Indeed, Spanish zarzuelas are not widely known in Armenia apart from one or two famous examples, and it is thanks to the “Tagharan” Ensemble that Armenian music lovers are being introduced to this genre.

As Gayane Ghambaryan describes them, these works embody the warm, passionate, and love-filled melodic ornaments characteristic of Spanish music, while all the featured compositions are filled with dramatic emotions of love, jealousy, and adventure. One of the soprano’s favorite works, for example, is Margarita’s Romance from Miguel Marqués’ zarzuela “The Iron Ring”, which tells the story of love between people of different social classes. However, the soprano delivers each and every piece impressively, thanks to her remarkable vocal abilities, charismatic stage presence, and artistry. The evening was undoubtedly a triumph, as evidenced by the standing ovations and cries of “Bravo!”

The concert also featured performances by the students of the “Ayas Dancing School”. It should also be noted that alongside the concert genre, operatic performance occupies a very important place in Gayane Ghambaryan’s artistic career, with the singer’s interests especially centered on the masterpieces of Italian opera.

Gayane Ghambaryan undoubtedly possesses great potential, as confirmed by leading specialists in the field, and the Armenian soprano has every ability to shine on the world’s most prestigious stages.
