People’s Artist of Armenia Raisa Mkrtchyan dies at 84

Raisa Mkrtchyan, a celebrated Armenian singer and recipient of numerous state honors, has died at the age of 84.

She was awarded the title of People’s Artist of Armenia, the Movses Khorenatsi Medal, and the 1st Degree Order “For Services to the Homeland.”

Raisa Mkrtchyan was born on February 25, 1942, in Sevan. She studied at the Romanos Melikyan Music College in Yerevan and later at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan.

From 1963 to 1968, she studied in the piano department of the conservatory. Beginning in 1968, she became a soloist with the Armenian State Television and Radio Estrada Orchestra. Since 2002, she had also taught at the Komitas State Conservatory.

More than 400 songs were recorded during her career, many of which are preserved in the golden archive of Armenian Radio and Television. She performed extensively around the world, appearing in renowned venues including the Metropolitan Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and famous concert halls in Sydney, Montreal, Beirut, and Buenos Aires.
