On August 26, Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan, accompanied by representatives of the Defender’s Office, visited Military Unit N of the Ministry of Defence.

During the visit, the Defender met with the command staff of the military unit and discussed a number of issues related to the rights of servicemen.

Anahit Manasyan toured the premises of the military unit and familiarized herself with the service and social and living conditions of servicemen, including issues related to the organization of medical care, food provision, discipline, and their moral and psychological well-being. The Defender highlighted the importance of the efforts undertaken in the military unit to improve service conditions.

As part of the visit, Anahit Manasyan also held confidential individual conversations with servicemen. Certain issues were discussed separately with the military unit’s psychologist.

The Defender particularly emphasized the importance of comprehensive and continuous efforts aimed at guaranteeing servicemen’s right to life and preventing deaths, suicides, self-harm, ill-treatment, as well as non-statutory relations.
Anahit Manasyan stressed that the incidents recorded recently, as well as the existing challenges in ensuring rights in the Armed Forces, demonstrate that, despite the efforts undertaken over the years, a number of issues requiring urgent and systemic solutions still persist in this area.

The Defender noted that issues related to the prevention of violent deaths, suicides, self-harm, and ill-treatment require systemic reforms, while the elimination of non-statutory relations in the Armed Forces remains a pressing priority.

At the same time, the Defender particularly emphasized the need to strengthen military discipline, maintain and improve the moral and psychological well-being of servicemen, and ensure effective mechanisms for the early identification of problems and an appropriate response to them.

Anahit Manasyan once again emphasized that the protection of the rights of servicemen and their family members is one of the priority areas of her activities.

The Defender also highlighted the importance of continued cooperation with the Ministry of Defence in addressing sector-specific challenges and ensuring their resolution.
