In response to the cynical display that took place in occupied Artsakh, Armenian society is rightly criticizing the European and American diplomats who witnessed it and were amused by Hajiyev’s brazen “ingenuity.” In occupied Artsakh, they were essentially celebrating, both literally and figuratively, on the ashes of universal human values—the consequences of Azerbaijan’s aggression and ethnic cleansing against the Armenians of Artsakh.
Of course, it is difficult to watch dispassionately as, for example, the U.S. chargé d’affaires in Baku dances with a so-called blogger who, with the evident patronage of the official Baku, is engaged in anti-Armenian activity.
Nevertheless, the situation requires us to look at the realities with a cool head. This does not contradict the legitimate demand that these diplomats be subjected to the harsh criticism they deserve. At the same time, however, we must recognize that, by and large, they simply do not care about any of this. Their compass and guiding principle are the interests of their own countries. Defending the history, rights and dignity of our country is not their job. Nor is defending universal human values their job, however painful that may sound. Their job is to advance the economic, political and military interests of their countries.
Of course, they themselves often pursue all this while waving the banner of lofty values, ostensibly “in the name of” those values. In that case, we should simply recognize how false and contrived it is, and not allow it to brainwash Armenian society. At the same time, this does not mean that those values themselves are false or contrived. No. Armenian society should strive toward those values, building its internal life and the coexistence of different sections of society on their foundation. That is the guarantee of a strong Armenia.

Simply put, in order to be strong, we must also not be gullible toward those who hypocritically carry the banner of these values.
