“One must not number the political forces”

Thinks the leader of the RPA faction Galust Sahakyan and on the other hand expresses his conviction that “numbering makes it more clear for the people to understand”

Yesterday the political forces of the coalition were absorbed in thought, however what happened was not a news and unexpected for anyone. It was clear before yesterday that the Prosperous Armenia Party longed for running for the parliamentary elections alone and the representatives of the PAP stated that a number of times. It was clear before yesterday that the format of participation of the coalition forces in the forthcoming parliamentary elections was not crystallized and that the most improbable version might become very probable depending on the political developments.

Yesterday in the parliament the Prosperous Armenia Party leader Gagik Tsarukyan confirming that the PAP would run for the elections alone, said only a few lines that became a source of heated debates. “If we are the second force, then what is the problem?” then added, “The small ones have to join the bigger ones.” In response to the question about running-not running for presidency, running alone or not, the party leader said, “The rest at the next class.”

We asked the leader of the Republican faction Galust Sahakyan to reflect on the PAP leader’s statement and he noted, “Undoubtedly it is our notion that every political force has to participate in the elections separately, its aim has to be as follows, the given political force has to be fully fulfill itself in the society. Coalitions are formed under particular political conditions, as the “Union” alliance was formed, i.e. when there is a social and political demand and never for an end in itself. And the classical way to run for the elections is to run separately. At the same time, there are political forces the powers and sizes of which do not suffice, but they also have ideas, therefore they have to run together and I do not see any negative thing in here.”

Today the two of the political forces inside the ruling coalition are basically making statements which one is the first and which one the second “powerful” force and it turns out that only the third force the Rule of Law Party is not making statements like that yet and is kind of waiting. By the way, the RLP leader and other members of the party talking of this issue claim that no such question has been discussed yet. Our impression is unequal conditions are established inside the coalition. How will this situation influence the parliamentary elections exactly one year from now? In response to our question Galust Sahakyan said, “The coalition parties are different political forces and cooperate on certain issues, each one is free to express its ideas, and we do not think that the political forces must be numbered; however numbering makes it more clear for the people to understand. Those political forces that have a large electorate are in the first places and it is, in political sense, a power, however, it does not mean that the political forces are like those that must explicitly think that they will perform with the same powers at the next elections again.”

Since the parliamentary elections will take place in exactly one year from now, the fate of the coalition is still unclear, will it exist until the elections or will it be self-dissolved near the New Year? According to Galust Sahakyan, the three coalition forces that have signed the memorandum will try to solve the problems they face “till the end (does this not correspond to “Struggle, struggle till the end”? – M.Y.), and the combinations will be made after the elections, in any case, according to the memorandum, the coalition forces have decided to act jointly. It refers to the whole election process and after that, according to the proportions.”

Taking the opportunity, we asked the Republican faction leader whether the idea that he had expressed to “Yerkir” newspaper that the Dashnaktsakan in office were Republicans and the Republicans without office were Dashnaktsakan corresponded to the reality. Whether Mr. Sahakyan’s idea was not perverted. Mr. Sahakyan said, in response, “Generally I sometimes try to turn a joke into a political aim to ease the tensions in the political field. That is a joke; it arose out of the atmosphere and can have a lot of contexts.” Mr. Sahakyan confirmed that he had said something like that and was not going to sue the newspaper.
