July 24,2014 14:49

Initially, as a deadline for accession to the Eurasian Economic Union, there were talks about June 15. Then, Hovik Abrahamyan announced that the issue of membership would be resolved until the end of September-October months. And yesterday, in the conversation with the journalists, he mentioned another date. “Armenia would become a full member of EEU by 1 January, 2015.”

Why Hovik Abrahamyan mentions different dates for joining the EEU, in the conversation with Aravot.sm, the Deputy Director of the Caucasus Institute, also political scientist, Sergey Minasyan said, “Actually, the factors which are talked about a lot in the expertise field and almost are never talked at Armenia’s official level is that the issue of Armenia’s accession is an Apple of Discord, which is used by Kazakhstan and Belarus against Russia in the EEU negotiations. They are trying to do something; they are trying possibly to extend the process, because if Armenia joins the Union, it will conduct more pro-Russian policy. Therefore, Kazakhstan and Belarus are using it.”

We clarified, in other words, when Hovik Abrahamyan is saying that only a few technical problems are left for Armenia to become an EEU member, we should not believe in that explanation, Sergey Minasyan responded, “Technically, I think that there are a lot of problems related to Armenia. For example, waivers for Armenia for customs clearance of vehicles. Problems related to this matter. But, the main issue are the political problems. It is clear that followed by some diplomatic ethics, Armenian officials do not talk about it.”
