Satian musical dynasty in USA

May 14,2015 17:30

Recently, Los Angeles prestigious Wilshire Ebell Theatre hosted an evening called “Aram Satian and Satian musical dynasty”. At the meeting with “Aravot”, Chairman of  the Union of Composers and Musicologists, Aram Satian, said that his father Aram Satian’s and uncle Ashot Satian’s, his son’s Davit Satian’s and his works were performed during the event in the US, while 7 composers are counted in the Satian dynasty. That day, Arthur Satian’s, Ashot Satian Jr. and Ruben Satian’s works were not performed. “I regret that the concert at the 1,400-seat Wilshire Ebell Theatre could not provide the participation of all our overseas compatriots who were willing to attend. The evening was attended by the Armenian singers not only from Armenia, but also the US-based (the poster in the photo),” said Aram Satian. He also added that the Wilshire Ebell Theatre is the oldest theater in Los Angeles and high in its reputation than the Alex Theatre well-known to all Armenians.

To the question asked half-jokingly and half-serious whether the Satian family evening in the US was the first one in the history of the Armenia perhaps because he, Aram Satian, is the Chairman of the Union of Composers, our interlocutor disagreed, “The talks about the concert had begun 3 years ago. So, you and the ones thinking like you are definitely mistaken. The talks were conducted with the Armenian American Theatrical & Musical Society & Armenian Entertainment Production famous organizations.” Certainly, there is no need to introduce the composers of Satian dynasty one-by-one. Some of the Satian family live and create abroad. The Diaspora and West definitely refer to the Satian’s works on different occasions. Therefore, during the conversation, we also touched upon Aram Satian’s activities as a President of the Union of Composers and Musicologists.

Our interlocutor informed that since the day of taking the office of the Chairman of the Union in October 27, 2013, in his words, the world today than ever has communicated with our contemporary composers’ art. “Only in 2014, various events abroad played the works of 52 members of the Union of Composers. Specifically, during the “Evening of Armenian Music” in December of 2014, in Boston, and then in Paris, later in Moscow and New York, the local collectives and solo singers performed the works of the Armenian authors. A great work is also conducted by the branches of the Union of Composers, for example, the National Conservatory branch together with the Armenian national musical instruments and the Armenian Singing Faculty of the State Conservatoire named after Komitas gave series of concerts in April. The 2nd competition of young composers named after Edward Mirzoyan launched on May 8 is continued.

Recently, the works of the representatives of the Armenian composing art were again performed in Boston and Paris to commemorate the centenary of the Genocide, and so on,” said Mr. Satian. To our curiosity about what the musicians enrolled in the Union are busy with, and their professional opinion in addition to professional periodicals are not often seen in the mass media, Aram Satian referred to the musicological international conference held in April to commemorate the centenary of the Genocide and with regard to the opinion of the musicologists often missing in the press, he said that any non-professional periodical has its orientation and for known reasons it cannot publish the overall opinion of the professionals regarding the topic.
