Quite valuable results were achieved in the excavations at the “Alexana Ghuze” Cave complex south-east from village Karindag, Nagorno Karabakh. Studies suggest the surface layers of the complex date back to 50-60 thousand years, a period when modern humans co-existed with Neanderthals.

The cave was a pagan worship site from 1st century BC until 1st century AD. Head of the expedition, doctor of biological sciences Levon Episkoposyan said 98 percent of this year’s findings are remains of animals.

“The most interesting finding was a part of a human thigh bone, which has to undergo deep analysis yet, because it’s badly preserved, but we hope to find some genetic material from it” he said.

According to Yepiskoposyan, in 2015, excavations found a human tooth in the same cave, which belonged to the Chalcolithic period.

“Through research we found out the tooth is 6,5 thousand years old and has belonged to our ancestors”, he said.

An Armenian-Polish expedition team worked at the cave.
