Yesterday the parliament discussed the bill of amendments to the Law of the Republic of Armenia on Citizenship. One of the amendments aims at eliminating the demand of knowing the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia for persons who have the right of getting the Armenian citizenship summarily. The existence of that demand indirectly presupposes the knowledge of Armenian, because according to no. 1040-Ü decision of the Armenian Cabinet dated 30.08.07, the test of Constitution knowledge is set in Armenian. Armenian Deputy Chief of Police Artur Osikyan who proposed this bill in the National Assembly stated, “There are patriotic Armenians who have difficulties in knowing Armenian and not giving citizenship to people like this is not right to say the least.” He responded like this to Heritage Party MP Larisa Alaverdyan’s concern that this would harm the issue of preserving the nation and also not knowing Armenian “prevents a patriotic Armenian from being involved in the development processes of the country.”
