The Heritage Party, “Are the Armenian Republicans more democratic than the Danish and Swedes?”

January 20,2012 12:56

Ruben Hakobyan, the deputy chairman of the Heritage Party, noted during the forum organized by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) and the Heritage Party on the joint initiative of conducting the upcoming National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia election through 100% proportional representation that the initiative of switching to 100% proportional representation had been put forward, since they did not see the willingness of the establishment to conduct a free and fair election. According to him, that will is not expressed by speaking from European rostra, but by real deeds and a real deed is switching to 100% proportional representation.

Ruben Hakobyan reminded that the President of the Republic of Armenia expected support from the political forces in his New Year speech, “Mr. President, if your expectation is really honest, we are ready to support, accept this electoral system and let the election be conducted in an atmosphere of mutual trust among the political forces of the republic.”

Referring to the claims of the establishment that the lack of majoritarian representation violated the constitutional right of the people, Ruben Hakobyan mocked, “Denmark and Sweden have unicameral parliaments and 100% proportional representation works. Does our establishment accuse Denmark and Sweden of being antidemocratic?”
