The Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP), a member-party of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), made a statement yesterday, in which it called on the Armenian community of Russia to vote for Vladimir Putin. “Compatriots, we ask and urge you to join your vote to really patriotic resident of Russia who will vote for Vladimir Putin. And let the following banner ‘If you vote for Vladimir Putin, you will support your Motherland’ be waved in your minds,” this is how the SDHP concluded its appeal to the Armenian community of the Russian Federation.
Aram Sargyan, the chairman of the political council of another member-party of the ANC, the Republic Party, stated during a conversation with Aravot.am that he did not share the position of the fellow member-party of the ANC, “I am personally against interference with our internal affairs from without and I am against our interference with Russia’s internal political and electoral processes in the same manner. I myself support the Russian opposition, but I don’t make appeals to the Armenian community of the Russian Federation.”
Responding to our question whether Armenia would gain, if Putin was elected, as it was in the statement of the fellow member-party of the ANC, the Republic Party leader said, “I absolutely don’t share that notion. I say that I am personally for Russia to become a democratic country, I don’t think that the state of democracy in Russia is any better than that of Armenia.”
Aram Sargsyan also said that no discussion had taken place in the Congress regarding the statement, “Member-parties of the ANC are free to have personal opinion and express ideas. Such issues are not discussed and shouldn’t be discussed in the ANC.”
