During a meeting with journalists today, dermatologist and sexual pathologist Karen Vardanyan, psychologist Samvel Khudoyan and chief specialist at the public education department of the Ministry of Education and Science Anahit Muradyan, presented methods and psychological features of sexual education, as well as means of avoiding dangers at Hayatsk (view) Club.

Since as early as year 2007, the subject Healthy Lifestyle has been taught in all schools of Armenia for the 8th-9th-grade students during 34 academic hours and represents an active method of teaching in the form of conversations, discussions and debates. The subject includes topics on proper use of alcohol, as well as those on proper sexual education and avoidance of sexual diseases.

“There are people suffering from AIDS in our surroundings too and children must know what a disease it is,” stated A. Muradyan. The specialist added that the program contributed to preventing the use of inaccurate information on the internet, “We direct teenager, giving him necessary knowledge about the process of maturing. The goal is to postpone the first sexual experience as much as possible, since it can cause many dangers.”

Psychologist S. Khudoyan stated that child’s sexual education had to be started from the early age and be directed toward overcoming such problems, as homosexuality and sexual identification, “Sometimes boys become so connected to their mothers that they start to show feminine behavior. Or when sisters and the mother tie a bow for a boy, it causes disruptions of sexual behavior in the future.” The Psychologist added that proper sexual education depended on the respective approach of parents, “There is no family in Armenia that doesn’t have problems with sexual life. One can meet 48-year-old virgins only in Armenia.” And K. Karapetyan stressed that misperception of sexual education was caused by the very word “sexual,” which was immediately associated with sex. “Whereas that word refers to a range of issues from psychological features of an individual’s sexual life to the activities of reproductive organs,” stated the sexual pathologist and added that sexual education was not a new term. “We studied anatomy in the Soviet times, but the topic of sex was tabooed. Now Armenia has taken top ranking for searching the word ‘porno’ on the internet. And the results are not professional materials, but pornographic movies and videos advocating free sex,” stated he. S. Khudoyan advised to live a sexual life after the age of 18, “And the right age for marriage is 25. In case of having a child at the age of 15-20, the probability of giving birth to a retarded child is high.”
