Aravot inquired from Hayk Babukhanyan, the leader of the Constitutional Rights Union, who has taken the 19th place on the Republican Party list for what merit he had appeared in such a good place on the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) list. Mr. Babukhanyan noted that expression “good place” is relative, “I was in the third place of the Right and Unity Alliance at the time, therefore there are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ places. There is work, duty toward the nation that we have to be able to carry out. As for merits, my merits and demerits should be assessed by the voter, our people.” He, nonetheless, reminded his parliamentary work experience, “We have adequate experience. Our party has been involved in those processes since 1990 and I have been a member of two National Assembly commissions since the age of 25. As for why we started to cooperate with the RPA or why the RPA started to cooperate with us… because there was community of ideology, there was community of conservative values and national conservative ideology. This is a very natural and logical alliance.”
We asked him to comment on the assessments voiced by some people that there were “political corpses” included in the RPA list, also on the fact that he was also mentioned among those corpses, “I will make a comment that some people feel uncomfortable that the RPA strengthens its list, strengthens its presence, establishes cooperation with the broad social and political spectrum and I would advise those people not to feel uncomfortable.”
By the way, according to Mr. Babukhanyan’s predictions, the RPA will win 50% of votes through proportional representation alone and will have an overwhelming majority in the parliament. He has reached this conclusion analyzing also the election in Hrazdan, where the formula “all political forces minus the RPA” was in effect, but the RPA won.
