“The governments of Azerbaijan and Armenia have mutual interests in the Karabakh issue,” Petros Makeyan, the leader of the Democratic Motherland Party, is convinced. During a conversation with www.aravot.am, Mr. Makeyan explained the Azerbaijani attacks on the Armenian positions in recent days by the very common interests of the two countries, “The interests of both coincide in terms of deceiving the internal society, patriotism, territorial losses etc. And regularly, in accordance with their interests – in the interests of either Azerbaijan or Armenia – they take their subversive or provocative steps. Both the Armenian government and the Azerbaijani khanate understand that nothing depends on them.”
According to him, the final settlement of conflict is conditional on the Russian-American factor, “And the remaining episodes, when there are deaths, are not essential for either the Armenian or the Azerbaijani governments. The main thing is that there is a process of maintaining their power, prolonging their power and
the factor of keeping the Karabakh issue burning is a means to earn money and to maintain power.”
Mr. Makeyan thinks that the Azerbaijani attacks will continue also in the short run, because the Azerbaijanis have understood that the situation in Armenia is not good, “If Armenia lays the foundation of a democratic country, provocations will be minimized.”VOICE227
