The Surgeon Whose Mistake Resulted in the Death of a 41-Year-Old Man Is Being Tried in Gyumri

Today the examination of a criminal charge brought against Hrant Henrik Nersisyan, the arrested surgeon of Gyumri Chermak Hospital, started in the law court of the region of Shirak. The charge is in accordance with Article 130, Section 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia – i.e. not fulfilling the professional duty or fulfilling it improperly by those who provide medical aid and service – and provides for 2-6 years of imprisonment.

The surgeon who has worked in Russia for 10 years is accused of incorrectly operating on and causing the death of 41-year-old Hmayak Mkrtchyan who had a car accident on the Gyumri-Jrarat highway. Today Judge Eduard Manukyan made public the charge brought against the doctor and the results of the forensic examination, according to which Hrant Nersisyan had made technical mistakes, while operating on the diaphragm he had harmed the heart, the stitches had torn the heart wall, as a result of which 41-year-old man had died.

The surgeon’s counselor asked for fast-track legal proceedings.

The trial is due to continue in 4 days.

Let us remind that this doctor had faced the same charges before – because of gunshots fired in the Duet café, the center of Gyumri, in the autumn of 2006, Mayis Karapetyan was injured who however died not because of the gunshots, but because of the post-surgery mistake made by Hrant Nersisyan. Nonetheless, the doctor was taken into preliminary custody, moreover, he was acquitted in the courtroom, since he was granted a pardon. Now the doctor is in the Artik Correctional Facility.
