The Hungarian Armenologist Apologized to Armenia and Condemned Hungary’s Decision to Hand Safarov Over to Azerbaijan

September 01,2012 13:17

Zhigmund Benedict, a Hungarian Armenologist, apologized during a protest outside the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs a short while ago for Hungary’s decision to extradite Azerbaijani Ramil Safarov who had axed Gurgen Margaryan to Azerbaijan. “I for my part apologize to the Armenian people and Gurgen Margaryan’s relatives for yesterday’s act, which is unacceptable and immoral for me. In my opinion, what the Hungarian government

did yesterday contradicts moral and universal values. I cannot agree with that act of Hungary, because that murder, which was committed 8 years ago, was committed so violently and Gurgen Margaryan died only because he was an Armenian. This is a crime against all humanity. I think that extraditing such a man to Azerbaijan is the biggest mistake of the Hungarian diplomacy in the past 20 years.”

Mr. Benedict shared the opinion of Yerevan that by handing over the murderer to Azerbaijan, Hungary cut a deal with Azerbaijan, “I think yes, it was like that and if the version of a deal is correct, I think it is immoral, because as it is known, Azerbaijan is an important trade partner for Hungary, but trade partnership must not be above universal values.”

Let us remind that the Hayazn union organized a protest outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today; the protesters marched toward the Hungarian consulate from there.
