Yesterday the UN General Assembly opened its 67th session in New York. After a week-long work, on Monday, September 24, a high-level discussion on the international law and rule of law is to take place. The discussion will be attended by both the UN member states and the representatives of the civil society. During the discussions a set of mechanisms will be devised to strengthen and improve the rule of law in different countries.

As soon as on September 25, the annual general debate will take place, during which the General Assembly will hear statements by Heads of State and Government. www.aravot.am will follow all the discussions of the UN General Assembly and the speeches made during those. Now let us present what issues will be discussed in the General Assembly on September 24.

Resolution A/RES/66/102 of the General Assembly provides for a one-day plenary. The President of the UN General Assembly and other high-ranking officials will make speeches on the rule of law at the plenary.

Let us also mention that before the plenary, a body comprised of non-governmental organizations, which will enjoy consultative status during the discussions, was created.

Since during the 67th session, the UN General Assembly will pay particular attention to the rule of law and international law, the plenary to take place on September 24 will not only be a platform for representatives of different countries to raise problems existing in these areas in their countries, but also after the plenary, a document will be drawn with the participation of the President of the General Assembly and the representatives of the member states. The document will contain concrete proposals and actions.

Let us also inform that the discussion on the rule of law and international law has been agreed to take place not only in the presence of diplomats with ties, but also the representatives of the civil society had been offered an opportunity to register before July 9 and to be able to participate in the discussion on the rule of law and international law in the UN General Assembly.
