“I have noticed a very interesting regularity. As the deputy chairman of the human rights protection and public affairs standing commission of the National Assembly, I have received many letters from citizens. They express different kinds of complaints, and it is strange and interesting for me that people mainly complain about home and social problems, for example, a neighbor about another neighbor, a wife about a husband, a mother-in-law about a daughter-in-law,” Margarit Yesayan, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary group, expressed this opinion with regard to the fact that today is Human Rights Day.
She told us that she had met with a citizen recently who had complained that his neighbor had his apartment renovated, and the noise bothered him, “Certainly, I understand that these are very personalized and personal complaints. It is clear that we have things to do in more important fields, I am just happy that people don’t rumor and discuss their complaints with their contacts and relatives, but have found the bodies, the figures whom they can pour out their hearts to.”
According to Margarit Yesayan, human rights are often violated in the legal system, “There are many complaints, in which people say that the legal system has made an unfair decision. I think that the rights of penitentiary inmates are also violated. When 25-27 people live in a detention cell intended for 10-12 people. However, the strangest thing to me is that all inmates in a penitentiary complain that they had been convicted wrongfully. During my visit, I didn’t meet with any convict, inmate or detainee who would say that he really was a criminal. Everyone said that they were innocent and they hadn’t been convicted rightfully.”

Margarit Yesayan doesn’t deny that there are serious problems in our country with human rights protection, “If someone is under the impression that I, as a representative of the parliamentary majority, should say that we have nothing to do regarding human rights in our republic, everything is quite well, he is wrong, because this is a field in which we have to work more than anywhere else, because our citizens’ interests are very often violated, and the bodies that are competent, whose duty is to protect citizens’ rights should do their job with maximum efficiency.”
