Was the Decision of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) Expected and Right?

December 12,2012 16:19

After the joint meeting of the PAP parliamentary group and political council today, the PAP released a statement, which said that the PAP would not nominate its own candidate for the upcoming presidential election and would not endorse any of the candidates. www.aravot.am tried to find out whether this decision of the PAP had been expected and whether the PAP had done the right thing during a conversation with political scientists.

Political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan said: “It was expected, since a fuss was made about the PAP. It is an important force, but they never prepared for the presidential election. It seems to me that other political forces that don’t have enough resources to ensure such developments regarding their candidate made that fuss. Particularly the Armenian National Congress, the activities of which in the past year were confined to finding conflicts inside the government and starting processes with regard to those. I think that what happened was the logical consequence of the PAP’s cooperation with the Republican Party and its activities in

recent years. The PAP is a rather powerful force, and the parliament offers it opportunities and a field of activity. I am sure that they will make the most of that chance. Yes, it was the right decision. I think that they considered all possible options and made the best decision for them.”

Political technologist Karen Kocharyan gave a short answer: “I can only say that there can be no oligarchic opposition in Armenia.”
