“Yes, There Has Been Such Discussion,” Suren Surenyants Says

December 21,2012 16:17

Yesterday www.aravot.am informed that recently there had been meetings of the liberal forces that had left the Armenian National Congress, during which they had talked about nominating Suren Surenyants, a former member of the Republic Party political council, for the upcoming presidential election.

Surenyants confirmed during a conversation with us today that there had been such discussion, “This issue was discussed not at the level of parties, but rather at the level of individuals. However, the issue of nominating or not nominating is not an aim in itself. It is

worth nominating only if I, for one, feel that this nomination can contribute to consolidation of liberal forces or circulation of liberal ideas during the election campaign.”

In Surenyants’s opinion, if none of the above-mentioned conditions are met, nominating anyone is meaningless.

Surenyants is favorable to the statement made by Hrant Bagratyan, the leader of the Freedom Party, about announcing his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election, “Hrant Bagratyan is one of ardent liberals. Unfortunately, I don’t think that the whole ANC will endorse Mr. Bagratyan. In the meantime, I want to understand how he will be nominated – as the leader of the Freedom Party, as a representative of the ANC or as an individual who can ensure broader consolidation, if he is nominated? In any case, Mr. Bagratyan is one of the most liberal figures in Armenia, I am only too happy about his nomination.”

Hrant Bagratyan, who was at the Republic Party congress today, didn’t wish to answer any questions regarding his nomination.
