“We have a decision of the political council; we will not endorse any candidate at this stage,” Garnik Margaryan, the leader of the Motherland and Dignity Party and a member of the ANC, said during a conversation with www.aravot.am, in response to our question whether it was possible for him to endorse Hrant Bagratyan.
We inquired whether he shared the opinion of the other Congress members that those who announced their candidacies contributed to legitimizing the Serzh Sargsyan regime, Garnik Margaryan said: “You know what, I don’t know what explanation they give, but if this regime exists, there can be no legitimate election, and it doesn’t matter whether they announce their candidacies or not; the regime will use all administrative and financial resources and will reproduce itself. We established an anticorruption commission on December 6, we are engaged in it, and we should expose this government as corrupted, oligarchic and criminal.”
In response to our question whether he would have also said that it didn’t matter whether one nominated himself or not, if Levon Ter-Petrossian had announced his candidacy, he said: “I said that Levon Ter-Petrossian didn’t have resources anymore. He also calculated and saw that he couldn’t struggle against this regime. They weakened the Congress and presented with a fait accompli.”
In response to a question what oppositionists, like Raffi Hovhannisyan, Hrant Bagratyan and Paruyr Hayrikyan, were struggling for, according to him, he said, “Ask them. I don’t know, I don’t want to comment, because except for Raffi… I have certain positive feelings for Raffi, whereas the others don’t matter for me at all.”
