An Armenian National Congress (ANC) Member May Not Abide by the Congress’s Decision

January 08,2013 16:02

Although the Armenian National Congress has announced its decision that it will not have a candidate and will not endorse anyone, some Congress members may not abide by this decision of the ANC.

In response to a question of www.aravot.am whether he would endorse Hrant Bagratyan or not, Armenak Dovlatyan, the leader of the Green Party of Armenia and a member of the ANC, said today that there was no final decision yet. As for what that decision depends on, Armenak Dovlatyan said: “Internal discussions are still in progress; a decision will be made.” We inquired whether they were internal discussions among members of the Congress, he clarified that they were inside their party. “I am talking about our party, and those are inner-party discussions.”

The remark made by Armenak Dovlatyan with regard to some Congress members’ accusation of legitimizing the Serzh Sargsyan regime by nominating oneself for the presidential election was particularly interesting. In response to our question whether he also thought that one legitimized the ruling regime by nominating oneself, he said: “It depends on the approach to the issue. Both yes and no.”

We asked him to explain why yes and why no. He promised to answer that question in a few days, when they would make the final decision whether to endorse Hrant Bagratyan or not.
