“Exceptions” for own people

January 11,2014 19:18

“Is it possible to compel a human to sincerely respect or hate anybody,” is asking a reader of “Aravot”, probably, considering my opinion expressed in my previous editorial that we need to respect the Catholicos and the Presidential Institute, if you are a follower of the Armenian Apostolic Church and a citizen of Armenia. I’ll answer: if it’s about personalities, no, it is impossible to compel. X person may stir the respect of Y person, or, let’s say, contempt depending on which characteristics the Y considers worthy of respect or contempt, and which it sees in the X person.

Another thing, when it comes to institutions. I cross the street to the green light, because I respect law, the order, and the rule of the game, and not the traffic policeman standing at the intersection, who might be a very bad man, potbelly, arrogant, a corrupt one. And, someone else crosses the street as it is convenient, because he/she does not respect the rule, although usually he is finding the excuse in the traffic policeman for his disorder. The same is true about the Catholicos and the Presidential Institute, which, in my opinion, should be respected. As for respecting-disrespecting the persons representing given institute at the moment is a personal, private matter, and a secondary concern, in my opinion.

When there is a talk about the rules of the game, here, it seems to me, it is not possible without some pedantry, verbalism, and formal approach. Otherwise, the exceptions would be more than the laws. Approximately as follows: generally the MPs must not be engaged in business, but if he is from either RPA or PAP, it is possible. Generally, the official should not “umbrella” the business, but if he is a high-ranking policeman it is acceptable. Usually, it is not good to hold a rally with sticks and explosives, but if it comes to the salvation of the homeland, it is very good. Typically, you can not swear in public places, but if it is “our brother Shmice”, it’s all right, he is a guy that was fighting. Generally, the journalist should cover the event and not participate in it, but should participate in the fateful moments for the country. The law bans obstructing the work of journalists, but if it is about Taron Margasyan’s PhD thesis, it is permissible. Usually, stealing the MPs’ voting cards shall be condemned, but for preventing the state crime it is welcomed. Overall, killing a person is a crime, but if it is done by our “other brother” Liska’s son, it is not a crime.

In short, figuratively speaking, the “traffic policeman” is standing on every step, which we can find an excuse for breaking the rules. However, the wording should be categorical: if it is banned, it is banned FOREVER.

Italian Fascist leader Benito Mussolini, according to some sources, has a proverb: “everything to own people, to foreigners – according to the law.” This is a universal formula for backward countries.
