Enticement of destruction scene

June 06,2014 13:28

“We need to get rid of Levon Ter-Petrosyan and his gang a day before, otherwise the country will be destroyed,” were saying the NDU and Dashnak members in 1992-97. Finally, the “popular forces” got rid of the first president, the country was not destructed, I suppose, it would not be destructed even if the first president would not have resigned.

“The moment is imperative to get rid of this nation-destroying power”, so concludes Levon Ter-Petrosyan in his yesterday’s article, called “Serzh Sargsyan’s road map for Armenia’s destruction.” A part of criticism in the article is relevant, the other part not so much (particularly, with respect to the economic steps of the new government), but one thing is clear. If Serzh Sargsyan resigns tomorrow, the next day, the next president, whoever he may be, will be accused of destructing the country.

Over 22 years, the problems facing us have not been changed, and this is probably the reason that the opposition rhetoric has not been changed. An apocalyptic image is introduced to the public, and only they, the opposition, may rescue the nation and the country from this nightmare, when the current authorities leave. Such tactic, apparently, is also explained by the bitter history of our nation, and by the fact that in the last decades, our intellectuals had made it “bitterer” by causing complexities in Armenians. “Destruction scenes” are integral parts of this history, and hence, they find a reflection in the hearts of nowadays Armenians. For this very reason, the opposition is speaking about “destruction” over 22 years.

But I want to talk about another matter, about “negative programming” of minds and words of all of us, regardless of political views. It is known that when you are talking about your and your fellows’ diseases day and night, they are not cured, on the contrary, they are aggravated. Normal people get their diagnosis, take the medicine and are trying to live a normal healthy life without groaning. Thus, they are treated.

“Oh, we are destroyed, oh, we die, oh, we Turks will slaughter us, no one is left in this country, all are emigrated” and so on. It is our usual repertoire. And maybe sometimes we would try to talk about why you need to live in this country, how can we create here, build, love and be happy. I understand that these ideas in contemporary Armenia will not have wide consumption. The idea of destruction is more enticing.

… Mother Teresa has a wonderful phrase, “I will never participate in anti-war rally. But as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.”
