Artak Shakaryan. “The former Turkish Government were not more Armenian-friendly.”

August 21,2014 13:46

The next Turkish most likely candidate for the prime minister is Ahmet Davutoğlu. Yesterday, in the evening, during the farewell reception organized in Çankaya presidential palace, in Ankara, such a statement was made by already former Turkish President Abdullah Gül. During the tenure in the office of Turkish Foreign Minister, which coincided with the process of initialing the Armenian-Turkish Protocols, Ahmet Davutoğlu managed to be notable for his scandalous and anti-Armenian statements. With his Armenophoby, the Turkish newly elected president, also former Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, does not cede to him.

To the question of Aravot.am, with what perspective the tenure of these two officials in the major offices of our neighboring country can endanger Armenia, turkologist Artak Shakaryan countered that Armenophobic statesmen have always been in power in Turkey, and in this regard, nothing has been changed. “It is not that previous Turkish government was more Armenian-friendly or more loyal to Armenians,” said the turkologist. To the observation that, however, Abdullah Gül was more tolerant, Artak Shakaryan countered, “The president in Turkey is the queen of England. So, no matter what Gül wanted to do, no matter how he wanted to be Armenian-friendly, he had no true power. The prime minister and the Foreign Affairs’ minister are the true power in Turkey. Hence, nothing has been changed. The recent ten-year logic between Armenian – Turkish relations will continue.”
