The Azeri studies expert Sargis Asatryan does not agree with frequently voiced view that the recent tripartite meetings of S. Sargsyan and Aliyev did not produce results. “Recently, the talks on Karabakh have been intensified, and the “weight” of Karabakh has been increased. The superpowers are trying to take the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict under the direct control,” said S. Asatryan, today, at the press conference with the journalists, noting that the importance of the region and Karabakh is increasingly growing also because the Caucasus is viewed as a transit route of resources. “It is important for the superpowers to see how this problem will be solved, because the presence of the conflict in the region is not beneficial to anybody,” said the expert on Azeri studies.
Referring to the recognition of Artsakh’s independence by the California State Senate, the expert on Azeri studies mentioned that, naturally, all of us are quite happy about the acknowledgement of Artsakh’s independence by such a big state. “But we should not fall into euphoria from it, says S. Asatryan, because California is not a separate subject of international law. True, it can be used economically and catch up this thread, but I think it is a great success for us first of all morally.” The speaker also referred to the Secretary of State J. Kerry’s behavior when he did not notice or allegedly failed to notice I. Aliyev. S. Asatryan is inclined to think that it was merely a coincidence, because, according to him, Aliyev is not a so weak figure, to whom such an attitude can be shown. “Interestingly, the Azerbaijani media do not talk about it. I imagine what would happen if S. Sargsyan had appeared in such a situation,” added the speaker.
As for the recent behavior by the President of Armenia, especially in international platforms, expert on Azeri studies attributes it to the brilliant operations of our army. “Our president is largely inspired by our army’s punitive actions in early August. He already has a serious trump card in his hands and can show, look, if necessary, we can give a serious counterblow,” comments S. Asatryan.
