Despite expectations by a particular segment of Armenian political field, Armenia’s affiliation to the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty was signed in Minsk, capital of Belarus. The document was signed by Vladimir Putin, Alexander Lukashenko and Nursultan Nazarbayev, the presidents of EaEU member states: Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, respectively.
Note that the ones questioning the signing of the document were referring to the reality that that for n-times, Armenia’s affiliation to this structure has not been occurred for different reasons. More pragmatic politicians simply cherished hope that this time too, the president of Belarus will hamper Armenia’s accession, as Armenia and Belarus discrepancies were more in number and significant with respect to further cooperation. However, the expectations of both skeptics and pragmatics failed. Armenia is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union. The so to speak official launching of the process will be given in 2015.
“As far as I know, the anticipations were largely in favor of signing it”, opposed our observation the President of the Yerevan Press Club Boris Navasardyan, in conversation with Aravot.am, referring to the signing of Armenia’s accession to the EaEU.
“Simply, people who were realistically assessing the situation and were driven by the priority with the development of the country, were cherishing very modest hopes that this time too Armenia’s accession to the EaEU will be hampered. It was a sad hope, as it was not dependent on the government of the country and the stance of political elite, but the unfriendly attitude of EaEU founders towards Armenia. In other words, we not only enter into a union where there are serious risks pertaining to development of the country and preservation of the sovereignty, moreover, we do it in the status of humiliated partner, which should still “show its gratitude” to those humiliating thereto. I am sure that many issues related to accession and essential for us are not finally agreed. And from the moment of today’s signing up to ratification of the Agreement in the EaEU founding countries parliaments, attempts will be made to impose serious concessions on Armenia, which will be very difficult to resist,” opines Boris Navasardyan.
