Chairman of Committee on Foreign Relations of the Armenian National Congress, Vladimir Karapetyan, believes that because of the inconsistent policy of the President of the Armenian Serzh Sargsyan, today, the Armenian-Turkish relations have appeared in a deadlock situation. At the discussion organized under the initiative of the Civilitas Foundation, he drew parallels in the works of the three presidents of the Republic of Armenia towards the improvement of the Armenian-Turkish relations, and criticized Serzh Sargsyan’s led policy.
Mr. Karapetyan specifically mentioned, “All the three powers of Armenia have done everything to establish and regulate the Armenian-Turkish relations. Ter-Petrosyan has its own policy, Robert Kocharyan does not differ much from his policy on relations with Turkey, but he has showed unique approaches especially to the Karabakh issue, as he had different approaches.”
Back to Serzh Sargsyan, Mr. Karapetyan stated, “Serzh Sargsyan inherited a situation where it was not clear what will happen. But there was no sharp decline in mutual trust, they were not good, simply there were no Armenian-Turkish relations. But, today, in addition to bipartite foul language, but there is nothing more. It is a deadlock, I cannot find any other characterization. Serzh Sargsyan, with his inconsistency, agreeing to sign a document which contains the wording of the historical sub-committee, to which the 1st and the 2nd presidents were against, led to this situation with his interview with the Hürriyet opposing the Armenian Genocide Declaration. Turkey, as well as the international community, sees it, they see that they seem not to dealing with serious people. Such policy is a major obstacle to the settlement of bipartite relations. Turkey is doing everything by acting from the positions of power to lead to such a situation, to which Serzh Sargsyan’s policy contributed.”

Director of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies, Manvel Sargsyan, thinks that Turkey is not interested in Armenia, but the relations of the superpowers related to the genocide who manipulate the Armenian question and increase the pressure on Turkey.” Vladimir Karapetyan shares the opinion, but he wants to understand what the reason for this situation is. “I do not want to push the political agenda forward, I just want to remind you that when the changes took place in Georgia, the new government acquired a high reputation by the international community and was able to raise much more sonorous questions. Armenian is in a situation that there is no one paying attention to any raised question. Who should raise a question: Edward Nalbandyan who does not know that Brazil has not adopted the genocide and makes an official statement? Who would accept such leaders or Serzh Sargsyan whose controversies of the words I have already explained.” In Vladimir Karapetyan words, “when we become a normal state where there are a competition and a regime change by elections, our voice would be more sonorous and we would be heard.”
