Former Deputy Defense Minister Vahan Shirkhanyan considers today’s response of the OSCE Minsk Group to the yesterday’s shelling of border villages a result of inactivity.
Note that the OSCE Minsk Group, today, again made sobering calls to both sides and announced that they are unable to clearly determine how the violence occurred, as each side accuses the other.
“This means that the OSCE has not been involved in the conflict resolution for years but formally spending time and has pursued its own interests … If the international community were interested in the peace settlement, it had a lot of leverage and mechanisms up to now to do it”, said the former deputy minister to Aravot.am. He is not concerned that the attacks of the Azerbaijani side are the beginning of the large-scale operations. “No, this will not happen … This speaks of the essence of political leadership in Azerbaijan: adventure, irresponsible, defying all international norms and a new minister, who is seeking to be self-established.”
Mr. Shurkhanyan is angry at the criticism of the actions of the Armenian side. “People who dare to give estimates having no true information, this can also be harmful for our army, no need to make conclusions by the articles printed in the newspaper if you do not have the true information, it is not right and the situation could escalate tension in our society. The situation is already tense at the contact line.”

The former deputy minister sees the reasons for the conflict resolution and the border tense situation in the activities of the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “All the issues in the territory of Armenia should be addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which should reach a solution through diplomatic channels, not just the conflict, but the current situation too. We should ensure that decisions should be taken to ban the selling of weapons to Azerbaijan. The OSCE should eventually show its strength and declare that Azerbaijan is not international norms violating and responsible political entity and to carry out an inventory of the arsenal in Azerbaijan and destroy the excess arsenal, all the grounds by the international treaty are designed. Our MFA should reach the solution of these issues, we have no questions to the Defense Ministry and the Defense Minister, they do what they should do, the problem is within scope of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”
