“Give Karabakh to Azerbaijan tomorrow, and you think they will reconcile and be brothers?”

October 21,2015 16:00

The Head of “Modus Vivendi” Center, Ara Papian, considers that the deterioration of the domestic situation in Azerbaijan can trigger the resumption of a full-scale war with Armenia. To our question of whether he sees a risk of war now, Mr. Papian gave a negative answer, but said that the country’s internal tension can induce the Azerbaijani President Aliyev to wrong moves. “The arrest of the National Security Minister was not accidental, he had been on the job for about 15 years. He was arrested for abuse of office power, if it were so, all of them would be arrested. Aliyev had a fear for himself, his family and his position. In other words, he fears, which can lead not only to a harsh rhetoric but also to numerous wrong moves.”

Referring to the discussions of the possible meeting of the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Mr. Papian went on saying that the upcoming bipartite meeting at the high-level on the NKR conflict settlement is impossible. “Let us admit that these meetings have become an end in itself, but certainly it is better than there were no meetings at all. It creates at least an illusion that the negotiations are underway. The meeting will be organized in the framework of some international event. In addition, it is also senseless. Today, Aliyev is implementing the Turkish grand dream, to exhaust Armenia by wearing it out. Yes, the matter here is not only Karabakh but Armenia in the first place. Actually, the conflict is in wearing Armenia out, in other words, the target is Armenia, destruction of Armenia. Give Karabakh to Azerbaijan tomorrow, you think they will reconcile and be brothers? Certainly, not. The goal of Turkey is to wear out Armenia and destroy it, which they carried out quite successfully.”
