Recently, there was a big fuss on the social networks associated with some wordings in the textbook of the 9th grade on “The History of the Armenian Church”, which restricts and pins down the freedom of the students. For example, the textbook reads (edition 2005, p. 24), “without the faith to God, there could be no high morality, holiness and majesty,” or (page 28) “the peak of moral value system is the love of God” and so on. Today, Aravot.am asked the Minister of Education and Science, Levon Mkrtchyan, how he will estimate it. The Minister replied, “Our school is a secular one and the main task of the history of the church should be introducing the child to his/her own belief, we well as to the religions of our state church and the world. This is the goal of this school subject. Naturally, as a secular state, there can be no compulsion.” The minister said that the alarm has reached him too, “When we talk to the authors and see the content, then I can say something, but this is the goal of the school subject. The goal is to introduce to our value systems.”
