How helpful will the word genocide uttered from the mouth of the Pope be? Michael Bishop’s opinion

July 09,2016 19:39

Aravot.am asked Shirak Diocese Michael Bishop Ajapahyan whether there will be countries that will adopt the Armenian Genocide after the Pope’s using the word genocide. “I think that the Pope’s word has nothing to do, it will not have any significant impact. Of course, some people connected the recognition by the Germany as a following to the recognition by the Pope but I see absolutely nothing common.

Everyone says what he wants to say, and everyone says according to his interests. Only the Pope can stand up beyond the interests and say things in compliance with the moral standards and moral principles, which preceding popes did not do it. As to why the preceding popes did not do it, purely not for preferring the moral plane but preferring the narrow interests of the Vatican.

Hence, no country will say that as long as the Pope recognized it we should also recognize, no such a thing can happen. Especially since there are no such Catholic countries today that are truly Catholic by their vast majority and by their morals and behaviors and should follow the pope. Hence, this is purely on the moral plane, and if this should be some kind of pressure on someone, it should be only Turkey and no one else. I do not think the Pope’s subsequent uttering of the word genocide will provide bigger political interest and benefit but it does not diminish the significance of the Pope’s move because the Pope had the courage to voice the truth both last year and this year.

Therefore, I have said again that the Pope was raised high therewith, not the genocide recognition recorded a big move but the Pope stood up and raised the rating of the Catholic Church,” said Bishop Michael.
