Shirak Torosyan. “The Armenian side should adopt a tougher stance.”

September 01,2016 10:38

“Certainly, war is the most horrible thing but if there is no possibility to resolve the issue through negotiations at the table, we should be ready for it. We are ready to give an adequate response to any Azerbaijani aggression,” – said Shirak Torosyan, an RPA faction MP, a member of the NA Foreign Affairs Committee, in an interview with Aravot.am, noting that war is a horrible thing but if there is no alternative, Armenia must be ready for anything.

After the meetings in Vienna and St. Petersburg, according to the parliamentarian, the Azerbaijani side has demonstrated that it acts by dual postures, both towards the international community and domestic audience: “If the Armenian side was ready to make concession until the war in April, after the war Azerbaijan is actually refusing any kind of dialogues and negotiations. The principles of negotiation in such conditions, naturally, should be changed. The Armenian side should adopt a tougher stance. If Azerbaijan continues its bellicose rhetoric, we must show that we are ready for it,” – said the parliamentarian, adding that the Armenian side is now strengthening the frontline and enhancing the fighting capacity of the army.

Referring to the recently intensified rumors about the return of territories, our interlocutor, first of all, said that a Nagorno-Karabakh conflict peace process does not exist today. Therefore, according to him, today no one in Armenia is thinking about concession of lands to the Azerbaijani side apart from those who speak about it. “As for mutual concessions that the OSCE Minsk Group is talking about, these concessions should not be considered in the form of returning of the territories. Considering concessions by handing over the lands, by all means, is not right. The option of concession can face numerous problems. Recall that we have had losses in the war of the 90s: Getashen, Martunashen, and Artsvashen. Numerous Armenian villages have been evacuated, by saying concessions we still have to address many issues,” – said the ruling party representing MP.

According to him, the independence of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic is the guarantee of the physical existence of its people: “We witnessed it during the April war when the Azerbaijani servicemen killed elderly people, subjecting them to severe torture.” The second achievement of the NKR independence, according to our interlocutor, is the existence of the second Armenian state, while the third achievement is the building of a statehood: “The current generation does not visualize its existence as a part of Azerbaijan. They are endowed with independent thinking.” Recall that September 2 is marked as the Independence Day of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh.
