Time of “dry pragmatists”

September 24,2016 13:03

Speaking behind those who have gone is not nice.  Every government staff, good or bad, has fulfilled the tasks that were set forth before them.  These tasks are primarily political, social and even psychological and only after then, economic.  The president appointing prime ministers and ministers, in all cases, is a political figure.  Robert Kocharyan perhaps was not dreaming to see Aram Sargsyan in the position of Prime Minister but the political situation required to do so, and the further process showed that from the perspective of Kocharyan, it was a correct political move.  While, for instance, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, as it quickly became clear, was wrong by appointing Kocharyan.

Therefore, the problem is not replacing bad people with good people and throwing stones behind those who are gone.  Simply, people appearing in the views comply with the challenges of the day.  Certainly, there are also deviations but if we try to present the total trends of 25 years in a “large canvas”, then we can say that the Armenian elite has passed three cycles, 1/ “ardent revolutionaries” (first half of the 90-ies), 2/ “fedayeen, with level of haughtiness and low level of education” (second half of the 90-ies) – Manvel and Seyran were the last “sparklings” thereof, 3/ “non-fedayeen – with the same manifestations.”  Their time has also elapsed, and the government change heralds it.

I repeat, it is not about good or bad, right and wrong, all three groups had wonderful people and criminals.  The new elite will also be so. The matter is about the character, worldview and anthropological type.  Now, I am sure that time for “dry pragmatists” and “technocrats” had come.  This does not mean that let’s say, the representatives of the previous “constellation” will not continue to occupy certain positions. But the main “trend” is different.  The “characters” of the new elite will be similar to the current Minister of Finance Vardan Aramyan or possibly Minister of Economy Suren Karayan.  I mean both the age, education, surrounding and the approaches to life and work.

Why does the time make a demand of such people?  Very simple.  Because the time for illusions, emotions and howl in the social and public system has elapsed.  Time for looking at the reality with open eyes and calculation has come, this is the demand.  This is the challenge of the new generation and the new way of thinking.

To understand which mindset is anachronistic, I will just tell you about my yesterday’s meeting.  At the cafeteria, despite the fact that I eat there, a man sat down at my table with a “national question”.  The content of the question was as follows: if the Turks recognize the genocide and decide to give us back our lands, so whether they will give these lands with the population, or the population will abandon the land and we will have only the lands.  The conversation that lasted for 20 minutes “revealed” that I absolutely do not think about the “national matters”.
