Charges have been filed in Arabkir Investigative Division of Yerevan Investigative Department of the RA Investigative Committee regarding the case of assassination and robbery which took place in 1995.
The Press Service of the Investigative Committee reports that the person accused of serious crimes, who has been wanted over 21 years, has been detained and presented to the body in charge of the investigation.
On 28 January 1995 the body of Iranian citizen with Armenian nationality Hayk Abrahamyan was found in his apartment located at Building 25/2 of Komitas Street, Yerevan.
The investigation revealed the circumstances of the murder and the circle of the suspects who had committed the crime. According to the findings of the investigation learning that H. Abrahamyan had significant amount of money taken with him from Iran a group of friends agreed to kill him and to appropriate his property.
The investigation revealed that the crime group had given Abrahamyan poisoned beer. Afterwards they strangulated him, gripped differed items and ran from the scene.
On the basis of the acquired evidence 5 people were involved as suspects and charges were filed against three of them under the requirements of several articles of the former Criminal Code of the RA. The criminal cases were submitted to the court.
Investigations were launched against the two of the suspects at large and operative measures continued to be carried out to find them.
After the new Criminal Code was adopted in the RA the investigative body made a decision to change the decision adopted on 7 February 1995 on involving A. Petrosyan and G.Safaryan as defendants and under the requirements of Part 2 (Points 8 and 11) of Article 104 and Part 2 (Points 1, 2, 3 and 4) of Article 175 of the new RA Criminal Code which took effect on 1 August 2003, a new decision was taken to involve them as defendants.
G. Safaryan, who has been under investigation for more than 21 years, was caught on 23 December 2016 and was taken to Arabkir Investigative Division of Yerevan Investigative Department of the RA Investigative Committee. On the same day a decision was taken to re-open the case.
Upon the acquired evidence charges have been filed against G. Safaryan in Arabkir Investigative Division under the requirements of Part 2 (Points 8 and 11) of Article 104 and Part 2 (Points 1, 2, 3 and 4) of Article 175 of the RA Criminal Code. On the same day a motion was filed to the court to reaffirm detention as a measure of restraint against him.
