Tom Catena, who is the only surgeon constantly working in Nuba mountains, Sudan, with 750 thousand inhabitants, was announced to be the laureate of 2017 “Aurora” prize. Renowned singer Charles Aznavour presented the prize to the winner. Let us remind, that Catena also will receive 100.000 US dollars reward, and he will continue the chain of donation directing the reward to the organizations, that have inspired his work. After receiving the reward Tom Catena mentioned the names of those organizations.
“I’m confused, I don’t know what to do, thank you. I felt at home here, thanks for cordiality”, said Catena. As he told, several years ago, while working in a hospital, armed forces attacked it, and he barely managed to escape from there. The only idea he was wondering about was whether the attackers did not understand that it was a hospital, and there were patients, “Then I realized, that they didn’t care. Our problem is that some people do not care about human life. I thank God that the other participants and I arrived here safely”.
