‘Creation of Iraqi Kurdistan will change borders in Middle East’, Turkologist

June 12,2017 18:38

Currently, the most important process in the Middle East is Iraqi Kurdistan’s independence referendum, expected in September. Turkologist Ruben Safrastyan referred to this during the press conference, “Turkey will face a dilemma, whether to allow this process or to prevent it. The future of the country depends on that choice”, noted the Turkologist.

According to the expert, though the referendum in Iraqi Kurdistan is announced, the establishment of this state may take years. Moreover, the referendum might not even take place in September. “It is important that the process is going on, and that a Kurdish state will be established in the Middle East in future, which will attract the attention of the world’s power centers. There are both risks and opportunities for us in this since some borders will be changed in the Middle East. On the other hand, Sevres Treaty should be the basis for a new restructuring”, noted Ruben Safrastyan.

The Turkologist believes that the referendum of Iraq Kurds will be a precedent for Turkish Kurds. Time will tell how and when.
