EU and its Eastern Partner countries step up cooperation on energy efficiency

The EU has reiterated its support for partner countries in their efforts to improve energy efficiency. During a recent meeting in Chisinau with Foreign Affairs and Energy Efficiency ministers from the EU’s Eastern Partner countries, EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, said “the EU will continue to support partner countries in their efforts to become more energy efficient as a top priority, for the benefit of citizens across the region”.

Hosted by the Republic of Moldova, the discussion included a foreign affairs session and asession on sectoral cooperation on energy efficiency issues. Dominique Ristori, the European Commission’s Director-General for Energy, and Jean-Christophe Belliard, Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service, were also present at the meeting.

“Developing and implementing cost-effective energy efficiency policy is key for improving energy security, competitiveness, boosting economic growth, creating jobs – and it contributes to preventing climate change,” Commissioner Hahn added.

“We are focused on delivering concrete results, with a clear programme for cooperation until 2020 and beyond.”

According to a press release by the EU, Commissioner Hahn and Director General Ristori discussed with the respective ministers the opportunities for translating energy efficiency priority into policy and investment opportunities.
