In an interview with the Turkish “Aydınlık” nationalist newspaper, Professor Yelda Ongun, Head of the Chair of Political Science and International Relations at “Baskent” University, Ankara commented on cancellation of Armenian-Turkish protocols.
Turkish professor linked Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s step to the election of Prime Minister expected in Armenia in April.
“There were 2 protocols signed in 2009. At that time, there were a number of factors for signing those: the bad state of Armenia’s economy, the pressure of Russia and the US, etc. After signing those in January 2010, the Constitutional Court of Armenia made a decision, according to which these protocols contradict the Constitution of the country. The question of the protocols was already closed without solution”.
She noted that the cancellation of the protocols does not matter for Turkey since Turkey does not need Armenia anyway.
“Thus Armenia shows that it does not aim at developing relations with Turkey. Turkey has treated extremely well: has provided electricity, assistance, has invited to the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization. One should keep in mind the following: Turkey does not need Armenia. And when we say “to gain” Armenia actually we expose ourselves to the risk of losing Azerbaijan. Turkey can apply more sanctions against Armenia”.
