July 22,2018 22:02

Arsenal star Mkhitaryan left Manchester United in January after a turbulent 18 months at Old Trafford. Express reports.

The Armenia international joined the Red Devils from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 with fans immediately tipping him to fire Jose Mourinho’s side to Premier League title glory.

However, he ultimately failed to live up to Manchester United’s standards with Mourinho regularly omitting him.

Arsenal finally rescued Mkhitaryan from his Old Trafford hell in January, with Alexis Sanchez moving in the opposite direction.

But the Manchester Evening News claim Manchester United only signed Mkhitaryan to sweeten his agent, Mino Raiola.

Two years ago, United were working hard to secure the signature of Paul Pogba.

The France international was in-demand after shining for Juventus.

United were determined to land Pogba but, in order to do so, had to mend their relationship with his agent, Raiola.

The super-agent had been blasted by Red Devils legend Sir Alex Ferguson after Pogba left the club as a free agent in 2012.

And the MEN suggest the Mkhitaryan deal was merely a “makeweight” used as a ploy in negotiations for the Pogba deal.

Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan explained why he left United for Arsenal back in April.
