‘It’s unlikely for there to be someone who dislikes Kocharyan more than I do, but Kocharyan as a person is one thing, Kocharyan’s human rights are another’: Zaruhi Postanjyan

December 21,2018 20:37

Zaruhi Postanjyan’s behavior has been a matter of discussion lately, especially her defense of Robert Kocharyan when she at one point completely opposed him. She now considers him to be a political prisoner. Aravot asked Postanjyan why she has suddenly started to defend Kocharyan. She said, “First, I am not defending Kocharyan, but instead I am defending human rights.”

Aravot then tried to clarify that she is not defending Kocharyan, but she instead sees a problem in the legal system. Zaruhi Postanjyan replied, “I am saying all of this as a lawyer. First, Kocharyan as a person is one thing, and Kocharyan’s human rights are another. If you do not respect the authority of the law, then you are the same as Kocharyan.”

Postanjyan, in response to the observation that the majority of society hates Kocharyan and wants to see him imprisoned immediately, said, “There are perhaps very few people who dislike Kocharyan more than I do. I want him to stand in court and explain what really happened and for him to be punished accordingly not just for March 1st, but for all of his crimes.”
