The IdeA foundation, in collaboration with the government of Artsakh, is beginning works to rebuild the Govhar Agha Mosque (the Great Mosque) in Shushi. Aravot Daily was informed about this by the public relations department of the IdeA foundation. They said that the purpose of the plan is to uphold the city’s historical and architectural heritage, as well as to promote the development of the areas surrounding the mosque in Shushi.
According to the source, the project also aims to emphasize Armenians’ respect for history and for the centuries-old relationship between Armenians and Persians.
The reconstruction efforts will be finished by the end of the year. The Iranian PartSaman Jahan architectural company and Iranian experts are also working on the case. The International Council on Monuments and Sites and ICOMOS Armenia are also working on the project. They carried out examinations of how the project corresponds to international norms.
The mosque is in one of Shushi’s eight neighborhoods. It stopped working as a religious site in 1992 when Shushi was liberated. The mosque was in ruins as of 2005-2007. Plans to rebuild the mosques of Shushi were announced in 2007.
