PACE rapporteur urges Turkey to refrain from military intervention in northern Syria

October 08,2019 18:03

Theodora Bakoyannis (Greece, EPP/CD), rapporteur on “The situation in Syria: prospects for a political solution?”, has urged Turkey to refrain from military intervention in northern Syria.

“Turkey’s military intervention on the northern borders of Syria, following the green light by the US President, will inevitably cause great tension, and possibilities of further conflict. This will have dire consequences for the Syrian Kurdish population, as well as for peace and stability in the whole region,” she said.

On 3 October, during the Assembly session, Ms Bakoyannis also welcomed the recent announcement by the UN Secretary General of the launch of a Syrian-led Constitutional Committee as an important step towards a solution of the Syrian conflict.

The text based on Ms Bakoyannis’ report, Resolution 2298 (2019), was adopted by the Assembly on 26 June 2019.
