Gevorg Gyulumyan to the minister: ‘Resolve those issues with the AYF Supreme Council, do not connect us with any political activities’

November 19,2019 20:10

Students are continuing their protests against the decision to make the Armenian language, literature, and history courses voluntary, as well as their protests in favor of the resignation of Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport Arayik Harutyunyan.

“If the minister has problems with the Dashnaks, he can resolve those issues with the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Supreme Council instead of connecting an 18-year-old girl and the rest of us with any political activities. What do we have to do with politics? Someone even said that we are handing out bribes. Where is the proof? Where is the proof that we are here with political intentions? Armenia is such a small country that everyone has friends who have different political views. It’s so small that there’s no one who is apolitical. What should we do, disappear? All of this is becoming ridiculous. He is saying bad things about respectable professors, meanwhile, he takes his pen and starts to speak,” a student from the Faculty of Philology at the Yerevan State University and one of the organizers of the class boycott, Gevorg Gyulumyan, said.

“The minister will either work essentially, or we will demand his resignation. If he listens to the requests of the professors and if he accepts facts that have been proven, we will change our demands because we don’t want to turn this into an anti-government movement. Many of us were at the foundation of the 2018 government change. We want this government to be successful, but that doesn’t mean that Armenian studies can be left as a second plan,” the YSU student said, and emphasized that no one is even thinking about ending their strikes.

Gyulumyan is also offended by the fact that the minister ignored the professors who participated in the meeting with him.
