Students at Yerevan State University were carrying out a strike near the office of the acting director, Gegham Gevorgyan. Coordinator of Student Programs, Eduard Galstyan, told journalists that the security guards asked the students carrying out protests not to hold their sit-in by the lobby to not affect employees.
“We obviously promised that we would not bother anyone worked, but we are trying to come up with a compromise so that there will be no unnecessary tension or clashes. That is why we asked the security guard to tell the acting director that we want to meet with him and ask him questions. We obviously want to meet with him in the presence of the media so that the meeting can be recorded live,” Galstyan said.
He also spoke about how students on strike were marked absent and added that he spoke to the Student Council about this. He also informed the acting director. “Students on strike also faced pressure; they were marked absent, and professors were asked to tell students that they were facing salary cuts for having absent students. Yesterday, students were forbidden from making use of the property. Many issues came to the surface and we are prepared to discuss those issues with Gevorgyan,” the YSU employee said.
“Students have the right to go on strike. One entire class did not go to class for one week. The whole class was marked absent. This is not normal nor is it legal. Students have the constitutional right to go on strike to protest against different issues,” Eduard Galstyan said.
