Parliaments free of sexism and sexual harassment

November 28,2019 14:36

Following a joint IPU-PACE study carried out in 2018 on “Sexism, harassment and violence against women in parliaments in Europe” and the adoption of texts by the Assembly on the basis of the report by Sunna Ævarsdóttir (Iceland, SOC), the PACE Committee on Equality and Non-Discrimination has produced an information brochure, which recommends measures and practical tools for national parliaments to end sexism, harassment and violence against women in politics.

The study, conducted by the IPU and PACE, revealed that acts of sexism, abuse and violence against women were widespread in parliaments and undermined women’s right to fully participate in political life.

The brochure, together with a set of guidelines published by the IPU, provides national parliaments with examples of good practice, but also with useful references and benchmarks to measure progress.

In the same context, PACE President Liliane Maury Pasquier launched the #NotInMyParliament initiative at the end of 2018 to combat this scourge.
