Redesigning schools for ‘digital citizens’

November 30,2019 13:07

PACE has urged European governments to overhaul teaching so that children are better equipped to handle the new digital environment.

Approving a report by Constantinos Efstathiou (Cyprus, SOC), the Assembly said school systems needed to undergo “a substantial strategic rethink” to give children the skills they needed to stay safe online, become responsible digital citizens and boost Europe’s economic competitiveness.

It suggested re-training teachers, rethinking curricula and trying out new digital-based learning methods, as well as equipping schools with fast networks and up-to-date facilities, among other things.

The parliamentarians also hailed the EU’s leadership role and “ambitious” plans for modern quality education, and urged extending funding in this area to non-EU countries.
