Responding to journalists’ questions about whether or not the authorities intend to silence Serzh Sargsyan so that he cannot criticize them through pressing charges, Prosperous Armenia deputy Gevorg Petrosyan said, “You need to ask the authorities about what they say and do. I cannot express how indebted they are to Serzh Sargsyan for being in power today and how responsible they are for Serzh Sargsyan. After all, it is true that the revolution was a bloodless one, which is why they call it a velvet revolution. But I do not consider that revolution to be a velvet one because it implies that we need to have a society where people respect one another. Instead, there is an unprecedented negative atmosphere.”
Petrosyan said, “I don’t know whether or not the criminal charges against Serzh Sargsyan have political meaning. Time will tell.”
Gevorg Petrosyan expressed hope that a new government change will occur without bloodshed, just as Serzh Sargsyan’s government changed.
When asked if he saw any dangerous messages in Serzh Sargsyan’s speech at the European People’s Party that would cause the authorities to want to silence him, Petrosyan said, “It’s possible, since Serzh Sargsyan’s speech wasn’t one filled with praise, after all. It’s clear that his speech would not have been pleasant to the authorities. But I cannot claim that the criminal charges pressed against Serzh Sargsyan were entirely political.”
