‘The ‘Azeri community of Artsakh’s’ argument to join the negotiations process is unfounded’: Deputy

December 12,2019 20:45

“I believe that Mr. Igityan made the statement outside of its context, so I cannot comment on his behalf. Our position has not changed,” My Step deputy and political analyst Mikayel Zolyan told journalists regarding fellow My Step deputy Hovhannes Igityan’s statement on the ‘Azeri community of Artsakh.’

Igityan had said that the Prime Minister is not against having the community’s members join the negotiations process with Aliyev. The criticism surrounding Igityan’s statement is that Artsakh, whose participation the Armenian side is demanding, is being relegated to the status of a community, and therefore, will lose its critical right to self-determination.

Mikayel Zolyan said, “Our position is that the argument for this community to join the negotiations process is unfounded because the representatives of this community are Azeris. And just like other citizens, they participated in the elections and voted for Aliyev, who is representing them in the negotiations process. There is no need for this ‘community’ to have its own separate representation in the negotiations process. This is what we are referring to.”

Nikol Pashinyan made several comments regarding the ‘Azeri community in Artsakh.’
