The head of the ARF Armenian Cause office in Syria, Mihran Vardapetyan, considers Syria’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide to be an important move. In an interview with Aravot Daily, Mihran Vardapetyan said that the acceptance of this resolution was the result of a lot of work.
Aravot Daily asked him about why the acceptance of such a resolution was never successful in the past, if the current acceptance had anything to do with developments in world politics and the situation in Syria, and how much Syria is using the Armenian issue as a weapon in those relationships. According to Mihran Vardapetyan, world politics certainly had an impact, but years of work took place for the resolution to be accepted and the events of the past three months are not the result of that. “The Syrian Arab people sought refuge many times and Syrian-Armenians were always by their side.”
Aravot Daily also asked about the Armenian community in Syria. Vardapetyan said that they are living happily after the liberation of Aleppo and Syria is in a much better position. There are, of course, economic issues, but the reopening of the airport in Aleppo gives people hope.
